Podcast | 'Jurassic Park' Episode Recap
In this episode, Imbibe Cinema hosts Jonathan C. Legat and Tricia Legat welcome special guest and visual effects executive Michael Schmueck to revisit Steven Spielberg’s 1993 ground-breaking sci-fi adventure 'Jurassic Park.'
Episode Guest
– John Hammond
While the eccentric entrepreneur character of John Hammond never fails to spare the time to remind us of the absurd amount of money that went into his park, part of what makes Jurassic Park hold up decades later lies in the filmmaker's judicious use of restraint.
Guest Michael Schmueck makes a point to call this out, citing, across the entire 127-minute runtime, there are only 15 minutes of dinosaur screen time. This consists of nine minutes of physical animatronics, including the massive 13-ton practical T-Rex that physically crushed the Ford Explorer on set, and six minutes of computer-generated visual effects.
Addressing the franchise films that followed this one, Schmueck and the hosts agreed that modern sequels continually miss what made the original great. Thus adding an ironic self deprecating twist to the already eerily prophetic line Malcolm delivers during the film. Since it can be applied to the use of special effects over suspense found in the sequels.
– Dr. Ian Malcolm
