When the kids head off for college, many couples find themselves forced to rediscover their own identities as individuals and as partners, not just as parents. After so many years together, are you suddenly going to discover your spouse, the love of your life, is now a stranger to you?
This premise alone is enough to send goosebump-sized chills through anyone in a long term relationship. Now add to that, a well-crafted suspense thriller and things get spooky. Director Robert Zemeckis showcases some traditional jump scares in this classic style thriller with nods to Alfred Hitchcock, as well as utilizing some entirely new and unique techniques to heighten the suspense of the film.
Performances from everyone in this film are enjoyable. Harrison Ford’s quiet choices ground his character, Norman Spencer. Michelle Pfeiffer gives us an adorable (not to mention: three dimensional) leading lady to root for. Both the script and the direction showcase supporting roles and allow the much needed humorous moments to keep the audience invested.
Enter Writer Clark Gregg. Plot twist! You didn’t see this beloved character actor behind the proverbial typewriter? Neither did we! Gregg laces a compelling story with a delightful assortment of hidden references or “easter eggs” to beloved Hitchcock films. See if you can spot the nods to: Rear Window, Psycho, Spellbound, Suspicion, and Rebecca hidden within the film. Please let us know if there is a Hitchcock film we missed that should have been included.
