“Blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders."
Mary Svevo (quoting Nietzsche)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind takes a dark and somehow still whimsical look at how much our memories shape who we are. It is a truly unique and brilliantly executed tale with so many incredible elements from the stunning performances of a (wow, they all got famous) cast, to its visionary writing and cinematography.

Over themed cocktails, either the "Meet me in Montauk" and the "Mind Eraser," the group ruminated over how different their perspectives were after a recent viewing of the film as compared to their initial impressions over twenty years ago. With Marc specifically calling out the “manic pixie dream girl” character trope utilized by this film. Citing Natalie Portman’s character in Garden State, released the same year, Marc points out this was typical of the time period. When viewing the film now, the allure of that quirky personality type is lost and in its place we see someone with serious problems in a lot of pain.

Listen in as we discuss a film that asks us to consider the worth of the journeys in our lives regardless of the destination, as well as the cyclical dangers that lie in failing to learn from our past.

"Please let me keep this memory. Just this one."
– Joel Barish
