“Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!”

For a high-stakes science fiction thriller about an astronaut with amnesia stranded light years from Earth, being the only chance humanity has against extinction, Project Hail Mary radiates a surprising amount of hope.

When a microscopic star-eating alien threatens to send Earth into a new ice age, humanity truly shines as people around the world work together to save it. Among them is our unlikely hero, Dr. Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling).

When we meet Grace, he is alone on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there or who he is. We discover the series of events that led to him being stranded impossibly far from home bit by bit as Grace’s memories return.

At the same time Grace is coming to grips with why he is alone in this far-flung star system, he meets an alien sent to save their world from the same fate that threatens Earth. The two must work together and risk their own lives to save their species from extinction.

This is a story that really showcases our need for connection, our love of wonder, and our capacity to overcome against all odds. Demonstrating what is possible, even in the darkest of circumstances, if our decisions are led by love rather than fear.

“I think Gosling was saying on the press tour, talking about the hopeful philosophy of the film, he said, ‘What if the future is not something to fear, but rather something to figure out?’ And I just love that mentality about the future,” Prchal shares during our episode.

For a ‘non-franchise film’, Project Hail Mary certainly saw a lot of love at the box office, and rightfully so, according to our group discussion. The film deserves its status as a “four-quadrant hit” because it delivers a well-balanced mix of action, heart, humor, and high-concept ideas. There is truly something for everyone.

“I texted Kevin right after seeing it. Actually, it’s almost like if Interstellar were an MCU movie – kind of that vibe. I think that opens it up to a lot of people,” Comello notes.

Drew Goddard’s screenplay adaptation for Project Hail Mary captures the novel beautifully. This is the second book by Andy Weir to appear on the big screen. The first being The Martian (starring Matt Damon), released in 2015.
