Episode Guest
– Song of Myself by Walt Whitman
This quote from a Walt Whitman poem echoes throughout the film and can apply to this story in multiple different ways. Are we merely the sum of our experiences? Does all of existence lie within Charles Krantz? Is everything in the universe just a bunch of math in the end? When it comes to The Life of Chuck, one thing is certain: there is more than one answer to these questions.
The Life of Chuck begins with the apocalyptic ending of existence before taking us back to a single, inconsequential day nine months prior, where we meet Chuck, played by Tom Hiddleston, and wraps up with Chuck’s childhood coming of age origin story. By the end of the film, all of this makes sense and still leaves the viewer with that itch to know more. Much like life, we are left with that nagging need to confirm we didn’t miss something important along the way.
The non-linear structure of the film along with the seemingly out-of-place connections between locations, people and things – such as the locked door, the roller skater and the song "Gimme Some Lovin'" – present the viewer with a beautiful puzzle to make sense of. An equation to solve, if you will. As Albie Krantz, played by Mark Hamill, explains: everything is just math, and math can be art.
While The Life of Chuck is a challenging, heavy watch, it is ultimately a rewarding and beautiful experience that emphasizes the importance of living fully while we have the chance.
